Professional help takes time — and someone needs to act in the meantime
Between the moment an accident happens and the ambulance arriving, precious minutes pass. Someone who knows first aid can make the difference in exactly that window — sometimes literally between life and death.
The basics everyone should know
- How to check whether someone is conscious and breathing.
- How to perform chest compressions, if needed.
- How to stop bleeding with direct pressure.
- What to do (and NOT do) if a spinal injury is suspected.
- How to respond to severe choking.
The single most important rule
Don’t make it worse. Moving someone with a suspected spinal fracture, for example, can cause far more damage than simply keeping the person stable while waiting for professional help.
Know where the kit is
Knowing the technique does no good if, in the panic of the moment, nobody knows where the first aid kit is. It’s worth knowing that location before you ever need it.
It’s not about becoming a doctor
First aid doesn’t replace professional care — it’s about stabilizing and buying time until someone who can actually treat the injury arrives.
