DSD Title: Water Pollution – Our Environmental Responsibility
Duration: 15 minutes
Date: July 15, 2025
Facilitator: Participants:
OBJECTIVE
To raise awareness among employees about the impacts of water pollution, identify practices that may contribute to this problem, and establish preventive measures in the workplace.
INTRODUCTORY STORY (4 MINUTES)
Back in 2023, a metallurgical company in Minas Gerais faced a critical situation that completely changed their perspective on environmental protection. For years, small oil and chemical leaks were considered “normal” by employees. “It’s just a tiny drop,” many thought.
Everything changed when Mike, an experienced operator, arrived at work on a Monday morning and found dozens of dead fish in the stream that ran behind the factory. The water, once crystal clear, now had a dark color and a strong odor.
The investigation revealed that the accumulation of “small leaks” over the months had seriously contaminated the waterway. The company was fined $400,000, had to invest $1 million in treatment systems, and most seriously, lost the trust of the local community.
Mike, who had been fishing in that stream since childhood, says that the image of those dead fish marked him deeply. “I realized that every drop of oil I let spill was one more drop of poison in the water,” he recalls emotionally.
The good news? The company learned its lesson. Today, it’s a sustainability reference, and Mike became an environmental advocate, showing that each of us can make a difference.
DEVELOPMENT (6 MINUTES)
3.1 Topic Introduction (2 minutes)
Water pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems today. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 2 billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water at home, and industrial waste continues to be a major contributor to water contamination globally.
Why discuss this at work?
- Our professional activities directly impact water resources
- Small individual actions generate significant collective results
- Environmental legislation is becoming increasingly strict
- Corporate social responsibility is fundamental for sustainability
3.2 Key Points (4 minutes)
1. Main Sources of Pollution in the Workplace:
- Fuel, oil, and chemical leaks
- Improper disposal of solid waste
- Untreated industrial effluents
- Cleaning products disposed of incorrectly
2. Consequences of Water Pollution:
- Death of fish and other aquatic organisms
- Waterborne diseases
- Scarcity of potable water
- Economic impacts on businesses and communities
3. Practical Preventive Measures:
- Regularly inspect equipment to prevent leaks
- Use containment basins for hazardous liquids
- Properly separate waste according to guidelines
- Immediately report any leaks or irregularities
4. Our Individual Responsibility:
- Every employee is a guardian of water resources
- Small daily actions make a difference
- Family and community awareness
- Strict compliance with environmental procedures
3.3 Interactive Discussion (1 minute)
Question 1: “Has anyone witnessed any leak or water contamination? How was it resolved?”
Question 2: “What simple actions can we implement today to protect water?”
Question 3: “Do you know the correct waste disposal points in our company?”
CONCLUSION AND COMMITMENT (1 minute)
Water is a finite and essential resource for life. As responsible professionals, we have a duty to protect it through our daily actions. Every leak prevented, every waste properly disposed of, every guideline followed is a step toward a more sustainable future.
Today’s commitment:
- We commit to being vigilant about leaks
- Immediately report any environmental irregularities
- Strictly follow disposal procedures
- Be multipliers of environmental awareness
VERIFICATION
- What are the main sources of water pollution in the workplace?
- What should you do when identifying a chemical leak?
- Why are small individual actions important for water protection?
SUPPORTING MATERIALS
- Visual suggestions: Before and after photos of polluted rivers
- Practical demonstration: Leak containment simulation
- Informational posters: Correct disposal points in the company
- Important contacts: Environmental department and emergency phone numbers
CLOSING MOTIVATIONAL PHRASE:
“The water we save today will be the water our children will have tomorrow. Be part of the solution!”
