Commuting Accidents: When It Happens Away From the Company, But Still Counts

Not every work accident happens inside the company

If you get hurt on your way from home to work — or from work back home — that can still be classified as a work-related accident, even though it happened far from the building. This is what’s known as a commuting accident.

What counts as “on the way”

  • It doesn’t have to be the single only possible route, but it needs to be a reasonable one.
  • It doesn’t matter whether it was by bus, personal car, or a company shuttle.
  • If you took a major detour for a personal reason, that can complicate the classification.

Why this matters to you

Once recognized as a work-related accident, you’re entitled to the same protections: temporary job security, insurance benefits, and the company is required to officially report what happened.

Notify the company quickly

As soon as possible after the accident, inform your employer. This isn’t tedious paperwork — it’s what guarantees your rights are respected afterward.

An important reminder

Safety doesn’t end at the company door. The commute there deserves attention and care too.
