Noise Measurement: The Sound That Steals Your Hearing Slowly

Unlike a cut or a burn, noise-induced hearing loss doesn’t hurt in the moment. It builds up slowly, year after year, until the day you notice you can’t hear the way you used to — and by then, there’s no getting it back.

Why measure noise at all

Measuring ambient noise is the only real way to know whether a given noise level is actually safe. “It sounds loud” isn’t a technical measurement — a calibrated meter is.

A simple rule of thumb

  • Up to 85 decibels: safe for a full 8-hour shift.
  • Above that, the louder it gets, the less time you can be exposed without protection.
  • Well past the limit? Then there’s no way around it — hearing protection becomes mandatory, no exceptions.

The right protection for the right noise

Not every earplug or earmuff blocks the same amount of sound. Measurement helps choose protection that actually matches that specific noise level — generic protection might not cut it in a genuinely loud environment.
