Risk Management: Getting Ahead of the Problem

Risk management isn’t guesswork

Risk management means looking ahead and asking “what could go wrong here, and what am I going to do about it?” It’s not about having a crystal ball — it’s about method: identify, evaluate, act, monitor.

The cycle that repeats

  1. See the real hazards in that activity.
  2. Understand the size of the risk — how likely, how severe.
  3. Decide what to do, prioritizing elimination over simply shielding people from it.
  4. Track whether the fix actually worked in practice.
  5. Review again whenever something changes.

Paperwork isn’t the point

All of this turns into documents — a risk inventory, an action plan — but the document alone protects no one. What actually protects people is what the company does with that information day to day.

It’s not just the safety team’s job

Real risk management only works when leadership actually buys in — frees up time, approves budget, demands results. Without that, it becomes a file that gets filed away and never looked at again.

Worth the effort

Every company that’s been through a serious accident wishes they’d done this analysis beforehand. Risk management is exactly the chance to not have to learn that lesson the hard way.
