Every rule has a story behind it
Safety rules don’t come out of nowhere — they usually exist because someone, at some point, got hurt or nearly got hurt in a way people wanted to prevent from happening again.
Where these rules usually come from
- Federal legislation, with standards that apply nationwide.
- Technical standards specific to each type of process or equipment.
- A company’s own internal rules, adding to what’s already legally required.
Why it’s worth following them
Fewer accidents, less illness, a company free from fines, and lower spending on leave — all of that is a direct consequence of rules being properly followed.
A rule without enforcement becomes dead letter
If nobody checks whether the rule is being followed, it stops being taken seriously over time — internal oversight is what keeps the rule alive in practice.
Rules need to keep up with reality
When the process or equipment changes, the rule needs to change too — an outdated rule can end up hindering more than helping.
