See it too often, and you stop noticing it
That yellow sign you walk past every day eventually just becomes part of the wall. A safety signage talk is the chance to get everyone to actually look again — and remember what each color and shape means.
The color basics
- Red: prohibited, or where fire-fighting equipment is located.
- Yellow: caution, extra attention needed here.
- Green: exit route, first aid.
- Blue: mandatory action here — usually PPE.
A good way to run this talk
Instead of explaining it in the abstract, point at an actual sign on site and ask: “does anyone know what this sign is telling us?” That engages people far more than a generic explanation.
Too many signs is a problem too
A wall covered in sign after sign makes the brain simply tune everything out. If you notice that in your area, it’s worth reporting — over-signage is almost as bad as missing signage.
The goal is understanding, not just seeing
A sign does no good if nobody actually understands what it means. Reinforcing that now and then is what makes sure signage actually does its job.
